Multidimensional poverty measurement with individual preferences∗

چکیده
We propose a new class of multidimensional poverty indices. Aggregation of the different dimensions relies on individual preferences. The Pareto principle is, therefore, satisfied among the poor. The indices add up individual measures of poverty that are computed as a convex transform of the fraction of the poverty line vector to which the agent is indifferent. The axiomatic characterization of this class retains the usual axioms of focus and subgroup consistency and it introduces additional principles for interpersonal poverty comparisons and for inequality aversion among the poor. We illustrate our approach with Russian survey data between 1995 and 2005. We find that taking preferences into account leads to considerable differences in the identification of the poor compared to standard poverty measures. JEL Classification: D63, D71.

Investigating the Factors Affecting Multidimensional Poverty Using Linear Mixed Beta Regression Model
Multidimensional poverty is a complex issue that is affected by various factors. Therefore, accurate knowledge and its comprehensive definition are great important. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of economic, social and institutional factors on multidimensional poverty based on a comprehensive measurement framework and using the beta linear mixed regression model, which is ...
متن کاملMultidimensional Poverty Measurement with the Weak Focus Axiom
The present paper defines an axiomatic framework for multidimensional poverty measurement that fits a weak version of the focus axiom and is consistent with Duclos, Sahn, and Younger’s (2006) “well-being” approach of poverty identification. This slackening of the tradtional axiomatic framework is appealing for two reasons. First, regarding the issue of poverty identification, the approach is le...
متن کاملFuzzy Multidimensional Poverty Index
Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI) is a novel measure of poverty that is being used by United Nations Development Programme. The MPI is the answer to the call for a multidimensional view of poverty (Sen and Anand, 1997). It evaluates poverty at the individual level, with poor people being those who are deprived in multiple dimensions of well-being, and also the extent of poverty by assessing ...
متن کاملChild Poverty in Vietnam: Providing Insights Using a Country-Specific and Multidimensional Model
Despite a wide under-prioritization, the issue of child poverty has received increasing attention worldwide over the last decade. The acknowledgement in Vietnam that child-specific poverty measurement is crucial for poverty efforts directed towards children, and the current lack thereof, instigated the development of a Vietnam child poverty approach. This paper proposes a country-specific, mult...
متن کاملUnderstandings and Misunderstandings of Multidimensional Poverty Measurement
Multidimensional measures provide an alternative lens through which poverty may be viewed and understood. In recent work we have attempted to offer a practical approach to identifying the poor and measuring aggregate poverty (Alkire and Foster 2011). As this is quite a departure from traditional unidimensional and multidimensional poverty measurement – particularly with respect to the identific...
